What is Saturn?
Saturn is a cloud-based timing software, offered as a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution. It provides a live timing system that can be used anywhere with an internet connection.
Why Saturn?
Saturn is named after the Roman god of time. Since we need good vibes and luck when producing live events, the name imposed itself.
How to Start
We recommend you start by reading the Getting Started guide to set up a basic environment. You can then try it yourself or read the Core Concepts documentation to fully understand the software.
Terminology
Organization
An organization is the container for members (timekeepers) of an enterprise or association using Saturn. It provides all members access to the events the organization produces.
Event
An event is a time-limited and geographically-specific occasion where a race or series of races takes place. For example, the famous "Patrouille des Glaciers" occurs in April (15 to 21 in 2024) and is located in Valais (Switzerland), specifically in Zermatt, Arolla, and Verbier.
Point
A point is a geographical location within the event area. Typically, there are two main points in an event: Start and Finish. Additional non-critical points may serve as intermediate checkpoints.
Placed Sensor
A placed sensor is a device positioned at a specific point for a limited time. This allows for a single sensor to be used at multiple locations. For example, a sensor could be active at Point 1 from 8 to 10, and then at Point 2 from 10 to 12.
Race
A race is a sequence of points to be completed within a set time frame. The start time marks the earliest moment a measurement can be recorded, while the stop time serves as a cut-off for data acquisition.
Participant
A participant (or racer) is an individual taking part in a race.
Manual Sensor
A manual sensor is a web application accessible at manual.saturn.8279.ch that provides an easy way to make manual measurements to back up a point or manage it directly.
Manual Corrections
A manual correction is a measurement added by a timekeeper directly into the Saturn application. When added, it becomes the primary measure for that point and participant.
Logs
Logs are the information the server returns when it detects problems with the configuration or event progression.
Results
A result comprises a start time, intermediate times, and the time of the final passing. The overall time is computed using the first and last points. Intermediate points do not influence the total time; they are purely informative.
